A prominent Mombasa lawyer on November 19, 2019, crushed to death after he plunged from a government building under unclear circumstances.

Sixty-nine-year-old Sammy Omutiti Anyanzwa (above) fell from the eighth floor from the Uhuru Na Kazi building that houses the Coast regional commissioner at minutes after 10 am and died on the spot moments after he had returned from a land registry to the sale of his land property in Mtwapa.

The deceased has been practising law in Mombasa for over 40 years specialising in civil litigation in the area of land and property. Several theories have been advanced for sudden death.

The body was moved to the Pandya Memorial hospital mortuary in Mombasa county where several people including his partner at the Anyanzwa and Company Advocates, Mr Japeth Asige gathered.

The lawyer from Butere in Kakamega county was said to be in the processing of selling his prime land in Mtwapa, Kilifi county.

His colleagues said Mr Anyanzwa had earlier visited the land registry on the first floor of the building to carry out a search on unknown properties and left only to die a minutes later after a drop from the upper floor.

His death sent shock waves among his colleagues who rushed to the scene on foot from the nearby Mombasa law courts.

Mombasa Urban police boss Mr Eliud Monari claimed the deceased could have jumped from the eighth floor at Uhuru na kazi building shortly after he left the first floor where it houses lands offices where he had gone to check on something.
