Monica Adhiambo Nyafwa, who died aged 58 on April 19, was a vocal advocate for women's empowerment.

She served in several women welfare groups and pushed without tiring for more women to get involved in running businesses.

Monica was well-known for her wide network of associates, and her home launched many political careers, from Members of County Assembly to, most notably, a former Member of Parliament for Rarieda.

She lived in East-Asembo location, Siaya County, and was married to the late Christopher Oloo Nyafwa. The couple is survived by six children: Winfred, Gorrety, Oloo, Elizabeth, Nyafwa and Cynthia, one daughter-in-law, Millicent, and seven grandchildren.

The infectious smile and loud laughter that drew people to her also found her a place in the New Episcopal church, where she served as lead singer. She was the comedian of the home, a jolly soul that never failed to throw in a joke even at the toughest of times.

The memory of her that will linger is that of a hardworking, trustworthy and inspirational mother whose smile only dimmed on realising that a day's meal had only vegetables – she was an uno cial 'anti-mboga activist'. Her children say this of her: "Even though we hide our tears when we say your name and remember your ever-lively jokes, nyagi Omondi, the pain in our heart is still the same.

Although we choose to be strong, smile and seem carefree, there is no one who misses and will always miss you more than us, mama. Fly with the angels, Nyalwala." Monica was laid to rest at her home in Rariw area on May 5.
